Elizabeth Warren and her very good dog Bailey joined the Washington D.C. protests
Less than half an hour before the official curfew started in Washington D.C., thousands of protesters were still walking peacefully in the streets of the capital. Among them were Sen. Elizabeth Warren, her husband Bruce Mann, and their dog Bailey.
Dressed in sensible beige shorts, sneakers, and a basic blue face mask, the last female candidate to suspend her campaign for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination was quickly spotted by her fellow protesters as she joined the throng in Lafayette Square. Many were clearly thrilled to see her, cheering as she told reporters President Donald Trump had been "wrong" to deploy the National Guard in the city.
"He is imposing violence on our people," she told one reporter(Opens in a new tab). "People are here to protest peacefully.

Warren also called for Attorney General Bill Barr to resign after reports that he had ordered the violent removal of protesters near the White House, and tweeted her support for her colleague Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand's bill to criminalise the use of chokeholds by police. Gillibrand was also in the presidential race until last August.

Widespread protests have emerged in cities across the U.S. in a furious response to the death of George Floyd — who died after a Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes — as well as other recent police killings, including Louisville woman Breonna Taylor and Florida man Tony McDade. These names are only the latest to be added to a shamefully long list of black Americans killed by police.f
Trump's response to the protests, in particular the order to disperse peaceful demonstrators near the White House using tear gas and rubber bullets for a Trump photo op, has drawn criticism from members of both parties(Opens in a new tab).
Other politicians who have appeared at protests include Reps. Ayanna Pressley(Opens in a new tab), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez(Opens in a new tab), and Joyce Beatty, who was pepper sprayed by police at the Columbus, Ohio event(Opens in a new tab), as well as Sen. Kamala Harris (Opens in a new tab)

On Sunday, Stephanie Grisham, the White House director of communications for First Lady Melania Trump, tweeted this nightmarish scene from inside the White House, as she was putting finishing touches on the decorations. Bunches of dead trees illuminated only from the bottom cast a horrifying shadow on the hallway's ceiling, leading to a lonely Christmas tree at the end.
The internet was quick to point out that the whole scene was more spooky than festive -- which is actually quite fitting for the Trump presidency.

Brits are angry that a mans story about mental illness was cut from TV because of the royal engagement
When the news broke that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle had got engaged, the nation could scarcely contain its excitement. And, for much of the day, our television screens were plastered with shots and footage of the happy couple.
But, for one man who travelled from Edinburgh, Scotland, to London to talk about his depression and suicide attempt on TV, the day did not turn out to be as joyous. Brian Wilkie's scheduled appearance on ITV's This Morning was cut from the show to make way for the royal wedding news. Grad student created an amazing Rubiks Cube prototype for the blind
A 1974 invention is getting a very inclusive makeover.
Kristen Sharpless had an interesting assignment for her Intro to Vision Rehab Therapy class. The graduate student from the University of Massachusetts was assigned to create an adapted recreational game for someone who is blind. In a flash of inspiration, she created a Rubik's Cube with tactile inputs so people with limited vision could still use it.
She posted the prototype on Reddit(opens in a new tab) and immediately received an outpour of positive comments.

This tactile tech is helping the blind experience the magic of fireworks
"I really liked about how much traction it got and the fact that I could spread awareness that adapting anything is possible if you think hard enough, and that even the most uncreative person (myself!) can think of something that somebody else could find really helpful," she told Mashable.
Credit: imgur
"I’m not a terribly creative person (which is why i’m shocked this became so big), so when I saw the Rubik’s Cube, I was thrilled when I knew immediately what to do with it," she said. "I had my best friend in mind (she’s not blind, she just loves playing with these things), so I thought I would make it tactile and blindfold her to have her try it out!"
The Rubik's Cube took her ten minutes to make and cost less than $15. She took an original cube and changed it with items she found in Michael's. The only challenge was finding different textures, but overall she designed each side to make it easy for everyone to understand.
It took her 10 minutes to make and cost less than $15.
"I wanted to share something that was cheap and easy to make so people who work with the blind/ have blind friends or family could replicate it if they wanted," she said.
The 29-year-old student chose the program to work with individuals who are blind or deaf and help them "navigate through the world and live as independently as possible." Sharpless mentioned on Reddit(opens in a new tab), she wants to "work with the Helen Kellers of the world."
"I have spent my entire educational and professional career immersed in the DeafBlind community," she told Mashable. "I would love for the opportunity to give back to a community that has given me so much."

Comment(opens in a new tab) from discussion I adapted a Rubix Cube for the blind!(opens in a new tab).
"What's awesome about [the two Rubik's Cubes for the blind] is that they all serve the same purpose - to accommodate the needs of people who are blind - but they all take different approaches, which is great because no person - blind or sighted - is the same and has the same needs," she said.
She has no plans of making more of the project or selling them, but she did learn a lot about herself and the impact one object can make for people with disabilities.

Jackie Weaver, hero of chaotic viral council Zoom meeting, did not have the authority after all
Jackie Weaver is a name you won't forget in a hurry.

Zoom council meeting takes an incredibly chaotic turn, sparks memes
A video of the video meeting between Handforth Parish Council's Planning and Environment Committee in Wilmslow, Cheshire, clocked up 5.8 million views and was basically an edge-of-your-seat drama-fest from start to finish. To summarise, Weaver attempted to deal with disruptive parishcouncillors by muting them and ejecting them from the meeting into the Zoom waiting room.

"You have no authority here, Jackie Weaver," was one of the lines that proved particularly popular from the viral video. And, in a bizarre twist of fate, it turns out Weaver did not actually have the authority, according to a report(Opens in a new tab).
An investigation into the disorderly conduct has culminated in six (yes, six!) reports being published by Cheshire East Council on the councillors' behaviour in the infamous Zoom call.
A 145-page report determined that Weaver "was not acting in an official capacity at these meetings" but added as a caveat that Weaver felt her actions were necessary given the behaviour being displayed by a number of councillors. The reports also noted that it understood why Weaver acted as she did.
In a statement to the BBC, Weaver said(Opens in a new tab) she welcomed the findings of the report but was "deeply saddened that it took so long and cost so much to get there." It was reported(Opens in a new tab) recently that the investigation cost over £85,000.
Weaver added: "We were still very vague about how virtual council meetings worked and I did not actually remove them from the meeting, in my opinion, I moved them to the waiting room."
"A little later in the meeting the remaining councillors voted to remove them," she concluded.
Despite the reports stating that several current and former councillors to be in breach of the council's code of conduct, there have been no formal findings made against any individual.
Per the BBC(Opens in a new tab), some former council members have rejected the findings of the report and do not accept that they were in breach of the rules. "In terms of the findings of the reports, we wholly refute the findings and view them as being extreme fiction. The investigations were in our opinion conducted with more than an air of mendacity," they said.
An unsurprising response, perhaps, given what we witnessed in the video.
"Read the standing orders. Read them and understand them!"
Trumps COVID-19 press conference just handed us a meme format

They demonstrated how the site would work on a handy flow chart.

The launch of OpenAI's ChatGPT this month has ushered in a new era — of social feeds clogged with screenshots and discussions of the chatbot and its seemingly infinite uses. TikTokkers didn't hesitate to divulge how they're using ChatGPT: to message Tinder matches(Opens in a new tab).
Using AI in dating apps isn't new. For years, programmers have been trying to further gamify the game of finding love on your phone. These Tinder users created bots to swipe and message for them and can do so with hundreds of users at a time. It's no surprise that Tinder bans users who do this, but even the app itself utilizes AI to generate conversation starters:
Tinder uses AI to generate conversation starters, but users are taking it to another level.Credit: Screenshot: Tinder
Those using ChatGPT, however, are putting in a bit more manual effort. Once they match with someone, they ask ChatGPT for an opening message based on their interests. Then they copy and paste the output and send it to their match. And honestly? From what folks are posting on TikTok, it's working.
One "Tinder veteran" used ChatGPT(Opens in a new tab) to generate a poem for the six-foot woman he was messaging. She loved it, saying a guy hadn't written a poem for her before. The caption on the video claimed this is the "future of Tinder."
Here's another example, this time a TikTok user requesting a weight lifting-themed opener(Opens in a new tab). ChatGPT spit out, "Do you mind if I take a seat? Because watching you do those hip thrusts is making my legs feel a little weak."
Once again, the receiver of the message enjoyed it and soon dropped her Snapchat.
As with using an AI bot to completely use Tinder for you, there are potential ethical concerns at play here; the dominant from these examples is disclosure. How would a match feel if they knew your messages were AI-generated? Are you lying by omission by not telling them a bot actually "wrote" the message? What if they were using ChatGPT to message, too — then would it matter?
These are questions we can't yet answer but surely will have to grapple with as AI becomes further embedded in our lives. As one TikTok user captioned, "AI just too overpowered."

Elon Musk endorsing Kanye, then reconsidering, is the worlds shortest love story
It only lasted for three days.
When Kanye West announced his candidacy to become President of the United States on July 5, Elon Musk was quick to proclaim his "full support."
But when a Twitter user pointed out to West's anti-abortion and anti-vaccination comments, Musk indicated he may be rethinking things.
"We may have more differences of opinion than I anticipated," he tweeted(Opens in a new tab).
Check out the entire exchange below.

Deadmau5 gets banned from Twitch for using homophobic slur
We have to stop saying these words.
The DJ/streamer Deadmau5 was banned from Twitch for using a homophobic slur on Tuesday. In response to being banned for violating Twitch's rules against hate speech, the 38-year-old deleted his Twitch account, esports insider Rod Breslau reported(Opens in a new tab).

Deadmau5, a.k.a. Joel Thomas Zimmerman, was playing PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds when his outburst happened, calling the player who killed him the F-word, among other things, resulting in his account being flagged for hate speech. Although the stream is now deleted, given the context of the situation it sounds like Twitch made the right decision to ban Deadmau5.
In a now-deleted Reddit post, Deadmau5 railed against Twitch for censoring him and criticized people who reported on his ban.

Deadmu5 also appears to defend his use of the word as a "heat of the moment" kind of thing.
"While it was intended to insult a fuckin asshat who was being a fuckin asshat... it wasnt 'directed at an entire group of people who have a sexual orientation that differs from my own,'" he wrote. "Fuck off with that shit."
In other Reddit posts(Opens in a new tab) that are still up, Deadmau5 continued to complain about people who were offended by his use of the slur as well as news outlets for reporting on it.
it's unacceptable to use these words
Deadmau5 refers to "Twitch's double standard" in his deleted comment, which, while he doesn't specify exactly what that means, likely refers to Twitch's rules against showing skin on streams. Some more misogynistic corners of the Twitch community tend to think that Twitch doesn't punish enough women for violating this vague rule. This comparison is strange because that has nothing to do with his use of a hateful slur.
Deadmau5 can defend himself all he wants, but the fact remains that he said a word that incites feelings of hatred against a certain group of people. People like Deadmau5 try to explain that they don't mean to use slurs in hateful ways, but that is just stripping the word of its history and meaning in a desperate attempt to save face.
That slur is hate speech, no matter how you use it. It is associated with a group of people and to use it in a heated moment as a means to insult someone shows exactly what you think of that word and the people to which it refers.
You can't separate the two things. Just like when PewDiePie said the N-word on a stream in a heated moment last year, it's unacceptable to use these words in any context.
It doesn't matter if you're caught up in the moment, you're really angry, or you're just trying to make a shitty joke. Take these words out of your vocabulary.
And please, don't defend saying these words. Learn from your mistakes. Educate yourself. Take a moment to listen to the people who are hurt by what you say. Be better.
Attention influencers: Changes are coming to LAs iconic Pink Wall
Change is afoot at one of Los Angeles' most historic attractions, the 17-year-old Instagram phenomenon that is the Pink Wall.
On Tuesday, April 19, painters could be observed painting a corner of the iconic pink storefront white.

The Pink Wall serves as the bubblegum pink facade of designer Paul Smith's flagship store on Melrose Avenue. It is more widely known, however, as a backdrop for selfies. People journey to the Pink Wall from across the world(Opens in a new tab) for a chance to snap a pic at the iconic location made famous by Instagram influencers.
But the all-pink building is apparently getting a facelift. On Monday evening (April 18), TikTokker notbfiner noticed the white paint and posted a video(Opens in a new tab) about it, aptly asking "Do you think the Pink Wall is going away? This could shake up LA like we've never seen before."
So sad, influencers are having to find new backdrops already.Credit: Rachel Kraus / Mashable
Employees at Paul Smith were tight-lipped about what the new paint job would entail. When asked whether the Pink Wall was going away, one employee, who declined to give his name, told Mashable it was "not," but said he could not talk about what the changes would be.
A painter with the company Overall Murals, who was working on the project, said they were painting "stripes," and thought it might be connected to Paul Smith's new campaign. The painter was also hesitant to elaborate.
It's unclear when the Pink Wall will appear in its new, potentially striped form. This is a developing story.

Adapting to change makes GoCo nimble and able to succeed
Over the past few months, companies across Canada have had to adapt to new ways of doing business. When you’re operating from several different locations or supporting WFH and remote teams, a reliable and secure network is one of your most essential tools. In this evolving environment, GoCo(Opens in a new tab) provides managed network services that enable your company to thrive, regardless of size or location. The company’s own ability to adapt to major changes in the global work environment makes GoCo(Opens in a new tab) an expert in bringing solutions to your business.
Agility in a shifting workplace
Even in a pre-pandemic world, teleworking was an exciting and growing trend, enabling employees to stay productive in new ways. In 2019, a Labour Force Survey by Statistics Canada reported that 85 percent of jobs in finance and insurance(Opens in a new tab), 85 percent in educational services, and 84 percent in professional, scientific, and technical services could be performed remotely.
While the precedent was certainly there, a study released this past summer found nearly one-third(Opens in a new tab), or 32.6 percent, of businesses reported 10 percent or more of their workforce was teleworking or working remotely. Now, as the potential for teleworking continues to expand, many business owners, managers, and IT professionals simply don’t have the bandwidth to operate multi-location networks.
To navigate a growing demand for remote work, GoCo(Opens in a new tab) provides managed network services, such as SD-WAN, secure VPNs, and MPLS, among other solutions, to keep your business running smoothly and securely. Working with GoCo(Opens in a new tab) frees up your time so you can focus on day-to-day benchmarks, strategizing, and supporting your teams.
Moving forward with confidence
Founded on a mission to shake up the industry and meet growing needs, GoCo(Opens in a new tab) has championed affordable and agile business solutions for Canadian organisations. As an innovative managed service provider (MSP), they’ve brought together the strengths and expertise of six founding companies: BroadConnect, Netrium, Radiant, bluArc, Ubity, and Infra-solutions. That has allowed for problem-solving abilities both nimble and authoritative.
With six offices across Canada and more than 300 employees, GoCo(Opens in a new tab) has been at the forefront of disrupting business communications technology through scalable solutions with speed. To meet current demands for greater mobility, their managed SD-WAN solutions simplify branch networks, optimize app performance, work efficiently in the cloud, and save money.
Some of the biggest benefits of SD-WAN (software defined-wide area network) are ease of use and flexibility. This growing technology doesn’t require specialized hardware or networking devices and can also route traffic to flow more cost effectively.
A nimble way to connect and collaborate
Right now, SD-WAN provides a path away from expensive legacy connections and the limitations of traditional WAN technologies. The issue of keeping info moving seamlessly was important before the pandemic and now with a surge in remote work, it has only come into sharper focus.
For the way businesses are working in the real world of the moment and beyond, GoCo(Opens in a new tab)’s managed network services can help remote offices and teams of all sizes navigate SD-WAN, from handling different types of traffic to prioritising critical applications, such as voice.
With the goal of transforming your business, GoCo(Opens in a new tab) takes an end-to-end approach. They work with companies who have been careful watchdogs of business communications innovation for more than two decades.
From international law firms to beloved Canadian coffee brands, they have collaborated with more than 4,500 Canadian businesses and 25,000 websites to develop customized managed network and voice solutions. Looking forward, GoCo(Opens in a new tab)'s goal is to make sure local Canadian businesses and their teams can keep working no matter where they are or what they do.
The saga of the barefoot runner, a local Facebook group, and some acorns
Local Facebook really is something else. Here's the saga of the barefoot runner and "I Love NE Minneapolis." You might want to sit down for this.
An irate "competitive barefoot runner" took to his neighborhood Facebook group to complain about the abundance of acorns littering the sidewalks.

"This makes my training sessions very difficult," he posted. "So this is just a friendly reminder to please keep your sidewalks clear of any acorns or other debris that might injure those whom are active members of the barefoot running community, including myself."
Then he passive aggressively dropped the possibility of filing a complaint to the city, before closing with a chipper "Peace and Love!"

As you can imagine, people couldn't possibly take the post seriously.
Turns out the whole thing as just some really good trolling. According to BuzzFeed, Eric Curtis, the man behind the posts(opens in a new tab), was just trolling his neighbors -- and the media. He was even quoted in the Washington Post(opens in a new tab).
"If only there were something you could put on your feet to protect acorns and other debris," one Minneapolis resident commented.
Someone suggested running with a leaf blower. Another suggested running with squirrels. Many straight up refused to sweep their sidewalks so that one person could run.

He posted a screenshot of his complaint and said that although he wanted to "resolve this in a neighborly fashion," and that the "threatening and hostile nature" of fellow group members pushed him over the edge.
"Unfortunately you have all forced my hand," he responded, like a medieval king on a power trip.
In the screenshot of the code violation report he wrote, "poorly maintained sidewalks littered with acorns, as well as cyber-bullyingand threats from the community."

As @alex_cono -- the hero who managed to grab all of these screenshots -- noted, the OP has a history of passive aggressive neighborhood posts. In a previous post, he referred to his significant other as his "soul partner" and asked if anyone else knew of "SERIOUS" unicycling communities.
Despite this all being just a troll, knowing the shenanigans and spats that go down on Nextdoor, this barefoot runner was not even that extreme.
UPDATE: Oct. 11, 2018, 12:17 a.m. EDT Updated with a report from BuzzFeed stating the whole thing was a hoax.
