Days after an NYPD car floored it into a group of protesters(Opens in a new tab) — just one of many instances of police violence in the city(Opens in a new tab) — New York City mayor Bill de Blasio responded with...John Lennon lyrics.

"I don't mean to make light of this but I'm reminded of the song 'Imagine' by John Lennon," said de Blasio, according to journalist Jack Mirkinson. He went on to say that defunding the police, a rallying cry of the George Floyd protests, was "not the way forward."
De Blasio was subsequently roasted by social media(Opens in a new tab) and traditional(Opens in a new tab) media(Opens in a new tab) outlets(Opens in a new tab), and then Fox News got ahold of the quote. "John Lennon wouldn't be safe in this city right now," said Kilmeade. "He'd be hiding in his apartment."
For those who are unaware (like Kilmeade, apparently), John Lennon was murdered in New York(Opens in a new tab) in 1980. His killer, Mark David Chapman, shot him four times outside his luxury Manhattan apartment. He's still in prison and his eleventh parole hearing is scheduled for this August(Opens in a new tab).
Maybe Kilmeade should do some fact-checking. Imagine that?

On Sunday, Stephanie Grisham, the White House director of communications for First Lady Melania Trump, tweeted this nightmarish scene from inside the White House, as she was putting finishing touches on the decorations. Bunches of dead trees illuminated only from the bottom cast a horrifying shadow on the hallway's ceiling, leading to a lonely Christmas tree at the end.
The internet was quick to point out that the whole scene was more spooky than festive -- which is actually quite fitting for the Trump presidency.

Brits are angry that a mans story about mental illness was cut from TV because of the royal engagement
When the news broke that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle had got engaged, the nation could scarcely contain its excitement. And, for much of the day, our television screens were plastered with shots and footage of the happy couple.
But, for one man who travelled from Edinburgh, Scotland, to London to talk about his depression and suicide attempt on TV, the day did not turn out to be as joyous. Brian Wilkie's scheduled appearance on ITV's This Morning was cut from the show to make way for the royal wedding news. Grad student created an amazing Rubiks Cube prototype for the blind
A 1974 invention is getting a very inclusive makeover.
Kristen Sharpless had an interesting assignment for her Intro to Vision Rehab Therapy class. The graduate student from the University of Massachusetts was assigned to create an adapted recreational game for someone who is blind. In a flash of inspiration, she created a Rubik's Cube with tactile inputs so people with limited vision could still use it.
She posted the prototype on Reddit(opens in a new tab) and immediately received an outpour of positive comments.

This tactile tech is helping the blind experience the magic of fireworks
"I really liked about how much traction it got and the fact that I could spread awareness that adapting anything is possible if you think hard enough, and that even the most uncreative person (myself!) can think of something that somebody else could find really helpful," she told Mashable.
Credit: imgur
"I’m not a terribly creative person (which is why i’m shocked this became so big), so when I saw the Rubik’s Cube, I was thrilled when I knew immediately what to do with it," she said. "I had my best friend in mind (she’s not blind, she just loves playing with these things), so I thought I would make it tactile and blindfold her to have her try it out!"
The Rubik's Cube took her ten minutes to make and cost less than $15. She took an original cube and changed it with items she found in Michael's. The only challenge was finding different textures, but overall she designed each side to make it easy for everyone to understand.
It took her 10 minutes to make and cost less than $15.
"I wanted to share something that was cheap and easy to make so people who work with the blind/ have blind friends or family could replicate it if they wanted," she said.
The 29-year-old student chose the program to work with individuals who are blind or deaf and help them "navigate through the world and live as independently as possible." Sharpless mentioned on Reddit(opens in a new tab), she wants to "work with the Helen Kellers of the world."
"I have spent my entire educational and professional career immersed in the DeafBlind community," she told Mashable. "I would love for the opportunity to give back to a community that has given me so much."

Comment(opens in a new tab) from discussion I adapted a Rubix Cube for the blind!(opens in a new tab).
"What's awesome about [the two Rubik's Cubes for the blind] is that they all serve the same purpose - to accommodate the needs of people who are blind - but they all take different approaches, which is great because no person - blind or sighted - is the same and has the same needs," she said.
She has no plans of making more of the project or selling them, but she did learn a lot about herself and the impact one object can make for people with disabilities.

Twitter thread asks how your name would be spelled like the chalkboard baby name meme
There's a little story behind every baby name. You could pass down on a family name, or name your kid a fruit like "Apple." Or you could just add a bunch of extra letters.
There's a growing trend in America where people make names more convoluted and longer than necessary. Braiden become Braiydin. Aaron become Airynn. Michaela transforms into Makayla, Mickayla, Makeighla, and McKayla.
This trend is attributed to mommy bloggers, prep school graduates, and "basic" parents. I'm sure you're probably familiar with the chalkboard images below from blogger McKinli Hatch, which have been a running joke on the internet for a while(Opens in a new tab).

The names aren't inherently bad or wrong, maybe just a little excessive, and a little white. These names sing the "BUM, BUM, BUM" in Sweet Caroline. These names ask for the manager at Starbucks when their Frappuccino isn't blended enough. You get the picture.
So Twitter user vib_ola asked — how would your name be spelled if your parents decided to write it like a Pottery Barn embroidered pillow? Most of the responses are clear exaggerations, but you would be surprised how many different ways people have spelled even my own name, Sage. I've gotten Sidge, Siege, Sig, Sans, and Sayegh from my Starbucks cup alone.

Milkshake Duck is a dictionarys 2017 word of the year, and damn right
Last year had a reappearing internet phenomena: The "Milkshake Duck."
The term has been named 2017's word of the year by Australia's Macquarie Dictionary, as of Monday. "Milkshake Duck" comes to define internet idols who become dizzyingly viral, only to fall just as fast due to their unpleasant backstories.
SEE ALSO:
Nobody has ever heard of Oxford Dictionary's word of the year
Coined by cartoonist Pixelated Boat in a June 2016 tweet(opens in a new tab), the term comes from a tale about a duck who drinks milkshakes. The duck turns out to be racist.
Tweet may have been deleted
(opens in a new tab)
In the most recent case of "Milkshake Duck," the teary video of 11-year-old bullying victim Keaton Jones was shared widely, receiving support from celebrities and the media. Barely a day later, Facebook posts from Jones' mother standing in front of the Confederate flag were unearthed.
Then there's the tale of Ken Bone, who once charmed America with his red sweater, undone by his problematic commenting history. Or Chewbacca Mom, who began charging for autographs.
"Even if you don't know the word, you know the phenomenon," the dictionary's committee explained in a blog post.(opens in a new tab)
"Milkshake duck stood out as being a much needed term to describe something we are seeing more and more of, not just on the internet but now across all types of media. It plays to the simultaneous desire to bring someone down and the hope that they won’t be brought down. In many ways it captures what 2017 has been about.
"There is a hint of tall poppy syndrome in there, which we always thought was a uniquely Australian trait, but has been amplified through the internet and become universalised."
The racist, milkshake-loving duck finally has the accolades it deserves, after narrowly missing out to the questionable "youthquake" in Oxford Dictionary's word of the year.
Shane Dawsons Jake Paul docuseries is already a wild ride
The first part of Shane Dawson's Jake Paul documentary officially dropped on Tuesday.
There are few YouTubers more controversial than Jake Paul. Though his subscribers are almost all children, the 21-year-old vlogger is known for posting overly sexual(opens in a new tab) videos that borders on softcore porn, peddling his merch(opens in a new tab), and being related to the guy who filmed the body of someone who died by suicide.
SEE ALSO:
Educator responds accordingly to Jake Paul's rude diss track about teachers
In addition to all of that, Paul and his vlogger friend group/mansion roommates (who call themselves Team 10) have been criticized for subjecting their neighbors to their wild on-camera stunts.
Paul seems to feel absolutely zero remorse for his actions. Whenever he gets backlash for his behavior, he'll release an apology, and then do something equally outrageous for his next vlog. His ex-girlfriend and ex-roommates, who used to collaborate with him in videos, have publicly accused him(opens in a new tab) of abuse, bullying, and assault.
Which is why Dawson wants to answer what we're all wondering: Is Jake Paul a sociopath?
In the first episode of The Mind of Jake Paul, Dawson gives us context in his interview with iNabber(opens in a new tab), a fellow vlogger who's famous for his on-camera rants that unpack YouTube drama.
iNabber questions whether Paul's cohort of influencers who share his mansion are actually his friends. He brings up the fact that everyone who lives there, or who previously lived there, didn't start out as a YouTuber -- they were all aspiring actors, models, and influencers. He addresses rumors that Paul's roommates are all paying to not only live there, but to be part of Paul's life.
"Having someone paying to be your fake friend, that's like next level," Dawson responded.
When Paul's ex-girlfriend was kicked out of the house for "cheating" on him, she revealed some juicy details of the Team 10 house. She claimed(opens in a new tab) that she had to sign a five year contract to make content with him, guaranteeing Paul a steep 20 percent of whatever revenue she made. Alcohol was banned from the Team 10 house, and anyone who lived there was subjected to dorm-style rules like getting approval from Jake for visitors. There, she alleges that she was subjected to daily abuse from Paul. At its worst, she alleges that Paul dragged her down the stairs.
iNabber also brings up the Martinez twins, who frequently appeared in Paul's videos until they were kicked out of the Team 10 house. In a later video,(opens in a new tab) they called his "pranks" and casual racism as bullying.
"Why would these people quit Team 10," iNabber asks. "If they were so upset about that, why would they stay?"
"Because of the contract," Dawson responds.
Dawson makes it clear in his narration that he doesn't want to give Paul a platform to defend his bullshit -- instead, he seeks to sit down the young vlogger and get him to take accountability for his actions. In one of the opening scenes of the documentary, Dawson plays a voicemail from Paul, who acknowledges his controversial reputation.
"I don't even think I have to warn you but people hate me, like literally," Paul says in the message. "If there's anything we can do to avoid you getting hurt we should do it."
Is it possible that over the course of Dawson's project, Paul finally realized how toxic his behavior has been? In a video released shortly after Dawson's first episode drops, Paul beseeches his viewers -- fans or not -- to watch the series "without any preconceived things or thoughts about me and Shane."
"I would say just clear your mind," he tells his viewers. "And just watch it."
Paul's extreme actions could just be a clickbait-y act for the sake of getting views, and that he's capable of feeling remorse. Paul admits that the series is bound to cover aspects of his life that "irritate" him.
"But the only way you can get better is if you acknowledge those things and learn from those things," he says in the response video. "And accept who you are."
Then he immediately plugs his merch, so who's to say?
Dawson's The Mind of Jake Paul is slated to be an eight-part docuseries, so if the rest of the seven episodes are anything like the first -- strap in.

Thieves kidnapped a shark by disguising it as a baby
Two men and a woman attempted to kidnap a three-foot long horn shark from the San Antonio Aquarium by disguising it as a baby. And yes, you did read that correctly.
On Saturday, a man plucked the shark from a tank at the Aquarium, quickly wrapped it in a blanket, put it in a bucket filled with a bleach solution, then put it into a baby carriage, according to BBC News(opens in a new tab).

The kidnappers were followed to their car by the Aquarium's general manager, Jen Spellman, who noticed water leaking from the stroller, Aquarium owner Ammon Covino told USA Today(opens in a new tab). After they were asked to allow a search of their vehicle the suspects sped off, but Spellman took note of their license plate and car model and reported it to the authorities.
The Aquarium also shared recorded footage of the kidnapping on its Facebook page to try to track down the kidnappers.
One of the suspects was tracked down and the shark was recovered in his home on Monday, per SF Gate(opens in a new tab). The police who investigated the kidnapper's residence also uncovered a vast number of aquatic animals. The person is now facing fines of $750 to $2,500.
“There were different marine animals," Leon Valley Police Chief Joseph Salvaggio said during a press conference(opens in a new tab). "(He) very much knew what he was doing and kept that animal alive, and was able to continue seeing that animal thrive, which was pretty shocking.”
Authorities are still looking to question the two other suspects involved in the kidnapping, according to BBC News.
Covino told USA Today that the thieves were trying to sell the shark on Facebook. The Aquarium said that the shark's value is estimated at around $2,000.
The shark, who goes by the adorable, if not somewhat ill-fitting name Ms Helen, is now recuperating.
"Ms Helen (our horn shark) is in quarantine right now resting," said the Aquarium(opens in a new tab) in a Facebook comment updating the public. "She is doing good so far, and we are hopeful she will recover fully from the shock, and return to her home she is used to."
We're wishing Ms Helen a speedy recovery!

Quordle today: Here are the answers and hints for September 17
The best Quordles are, of course, the hard ones — the ones where you almost don't get all four answers...and then you do. Today's is maybe a little too hard. To say more would be too much of a hint, and there are plenty of hints still to come in this article.
In fact, there aren't just hints here, but the whole Quordle solution. Scroll to the bottom of this page, and there it is. But are you sure you need all four answers? Maybe you just need a strategy guide. Either way, scroll down, and you'll get what you need.
What is Quordle?
Quordle is a five-letter word guessing game similar to Wordle, except each guess applies letters to four words at the same time. You get nine guesses instead of six to correctly guess all four words. It looks like playing four Wordle games at the same time, and that is essentially what it is. But it's not nearly as intimidating as it sounds.
Is Quordle harder than Wordle?
Yes, though not diabolically so.
Where did Quordle come from?
Amid the Wordle boom of late 2021 and early 2022, when everyone was learning to love free, in-browser, once-a-day word guessing games, creator Freddie Meyer says he took inspiration from one of the first big Wordle variations, Dordle — the one where you essentially play two Wordles at once. He took things up a notch, and released Quordle on January 30(Opens in a new tab). Meyer's creation was covered in The Guardian(Opens in a new tab) six days later, and now, according to Meyer, it attracts millions of daily users. Today, Meyer earns modest revenue(Opens in a new tab) from Patreon, where dedicated Quordle fans can donate to keep their favorite puzzle game running.
How is Quordle pronounced?
“Kwordle.” It should rhyme with “Wordle,” and definitely should not be pronounced exactly like "curdle.”
Is Quordle strategy different from Wordle?
Yes and no.
Your starting strategy should be the same as with Wordle. In fact, if you have a favorite Wordle opening word, there’s no reason to change that here. We suggest something rich in vowels, featuring common letters like C, R, and N. But you do you.
After your first guess, however, you’ll notice things getting out of control if you play Quordle exactly like Wordle.
What should I do in Quordle that I don’t do in Wordle?
Solving a Wordle puzzle can famously come down to a series of single letter-change variations. If you’ve narrowed it down to “-IGHT,” you could guess “MIGHT” “NIGHT” “LIGHT” and “SIGHT” and one of those will probably be the solution — though this is also a famous way to end up losing in Wordle, particularly if you play on “hard mode.” In Quordle, however, this sort of single-letter winnowing is a deadly trap, and it hints at the important strategic difference between Wordle and Quordle: In Quordle, you can't afford to waste guesses unless you're eliminating as many letters as possible at all times.
Guessing a completely random word that you already know isn't the solution, just to eliminate three or four possible letters you haven’t tried yet, is thought of as a desperate, latch-ditch move in Wordle. In Quordle, however, it's a normal part of the player's strategic toolset.
Is there a way to get the answer faster?
In my experience Quordle can be a slow game, sometimes dragging out longer than it would take to play Wordle four times. But a sort of blunt-force guessing approach can speed things up. The following strategy also works with Wordle if you only want the solution, and don’t care about having the fewest possible guesses:
Try starting with a series of words that puts all the vowels (including Y) on the board, along with some other common letters. We've had good luck with the three words: “NOTES,” “ACRID,” and “LUMPY.” YouTuber DougMansLand(Opens in a new tab) suggests four words: “CANOE,” “SKIRT,” “PLUMB,” and “FUDGY.”
Most of the alphabet is now eliminated, and you’ll only have the ability to make one or two wrong guesses if you use this strategy. But in most cases you’ll have all the information you need to guess the remaining words without any wrong guesses.
If strategy isn't helping, and you're still stumped, here are some hints:
A semi-useful hint about today’s puzzle
Synonyms for all four words are in the following very strange sentence (in no particular order).
The man I work for can't seem to shut his cologne bottle for more than a few minutes, so he must be trying to cover up the fact that he has the odor of a young horse.
Are there any double or triple letters in today’s Quordle words?
Two words have two instances of the same letter.
Are any rare letters being used in today’s Quordle like Q or Z?
No.
Any other big hints?
One of today's words is rarely used outside the worlds of animal husbandry and crossword puzzles.
Watch Rihanna vogue to the A Star Is Born soundtrack
Welcome to the beautiful world of watching Rihanna vogue to various songs on Twitter.
It's pretty straight forward: People have started editing a clip of Rihanna dancing during her ANTI tour to other songs like Azealia Banks' "Anna Wintour" or Lady Gaga's "Judas." Like the "Party Rock Anthem" meme, her choreography matches tons of songs.

Soccer fans throw hundreds of stuffed animals to sick kids sitting below
It takes a lot of grime for a reusable water bottle to look dirty. After all, it's usually just water in there. Bad news, though: If you're not giving your Hydro Flask a regular scrub with a bottle brush, there might be a bacterial storm a-brewing inside its walls that could potentially get you sick.
Buying a reusable bottle, whether it's made of stainless steel, glass, or a thick plastic, is a good investment. Not only will you save money by never buying bottled water, but you'll also avoid contributing to the nearly 50 million water bottles(Opens in a new tab) Americans purchase per year. (Less than 30 percent of these end up recycled.) Still, it's important to make sure you are dumping water into your body from a clean vessel. And yours is probably not that clean.
Is my water bottle gross?
If you're just cleaning the parts of the bottle that your mouth touches, then yes, your water bottle is gross. According to Dr. Philip Tierno, clinical professor of pathology and microbiology at NYU Langone Medical Center, it's imperative to scrub the inside of the bottle, too. Merely rinsing is not going to do the trick.
"Bacteria tend to form a biofilm on the inside of the reusable container over time," he said in an interview. "So you need mechanical action to get rid of that biofilm that coats the inside of the bottle." He compared the accumulation to barnacles on a boat, or the soap grime that builds up on a bathtub.
Ew, what's in a biofilm?
This biofilm likely contains various types of bacteria, from the materials that were already inside your mouth (backwash) to the other stuff that sneaks in when you bring your water bottle out into the world. It's this outside material that presents the highest risk of making you sick, Tierno explained.

"Some people may [for example] carry strains of staph that other people don’t have. They may pick those up shaking hands with somebody, touching things like countertops, doorknobs, elevator buttons, telephones, computer keyboards," he said. "You’re constantly exchanging flora on your hands, and then you’re touching your water bottle." You're unscrewing it, capping it, scraping lipstick from the mouthpiece — basically, you're ensuring that whatever was on your hands is getting into that water.
Tierno gave a harrowing example: Someone who has norovirus touches a doorknob, then you touch the same doorknob. Then you use your hand, which now has norovirus on it, to flip up the rubber mouthpiece on your CamelBak. "You've now introduced norovirus into that mixture of flora," said Tierno. "The same [can happen] with other fecal-borne organisms, and that's what you really have to worry about."
Oh, god. So how do I make it not-gross?
Here's the good news: You can absolutely salvage your slimy Nalgene. If you clean it correctly, it'll likely still be safe for indefinite use. The key is to clean the entire thing — interior, exterior, and mouthpiece — with hot water, soap, and a bottle brush when applicable.
Bottles with wide, circular mouths tend to be easier to clean — there aren't any nooks and crannies where moisture can build up over time. If you simply must have a water bottle with a rubber mouthpiece (like a CamelBak bite valve), make sure you follow the brand's specific instructions(Opens in a new tab) for sanitizing.
If you clean your bottle correctly, it will likely be safe for indefinite use.
It's also important to keep your bottle brush clean, just like you would any other sponge. Experts suggest running it through the dishwasher after every couple of uses and replacing it often. If you don't have a dishwasher, you can clean your bottle brush(Opens in a new tab) by soaking it in a large bowl of hot, soapy water and vinegar, then scraping off any residue with a clean fork or comb. In either case, you should replace the whole brush every few months or so.
Finally, it's probably smart to get in the habit of applying hand sanitizer before you touch the top of your water bottle, especially if you're in a germy place like an airplane, a doctor's office, or public transit.
What if I'm one of those people who refills the same Dasani bottle until it smells weird and mildew-y?
You should not do that. Please get a reusable water bottle. It will be cheaper in the end, and there is no good reason to lug around your week-old SmartWater receptacle.
But if you absolutely must fill up your single-use bottle with tap water one extra time, do your thing. Tierno explained that it's technically fine as long as you wash the bottle with soap and water in between uses.
Tweet may have been deleted
(opens in a new tab)(Opens in a new tab)
However, it's important to remember that single-use water bottles, per their name, are not designed to be used more than once. This is because it's easier for them to get dirty. When you touch the bottle continuously over multiple days, Tierno said, the surface becomes littered with "cracks and scratches and fissures that can actually house bacteria." (Single-use bottles have become thinner(Opens in a new tab) over the years in an effort to use less material, making them even more susceptible to such nicks.)
It's also worth noting that some types of plastic — including polyethylene terephthalate, which is used to make many one-use consumer plastic products — can leach chemicals(Opens in a new tab) if exposed to extreme conditions. "The longer you hold your bottle, the longer it's subjected to heat and light. That's where leaching can occur," Tierno said. "They're really meant for a one-time use and then a recycle."
Tierno also cited a 2003 study from the University of Calgary in which 75 elementary school student reused their own plastic water bottles over the course of several months. When the study concluded, the water bottles contained so much bacteria(Opens in a new tab) that a boil-water notice would have been required under normal circumstances. This is an extreme example, Tierno emphasized, but underscores the point that even if no one shares your bottle, outside bacteria are going to find their way in.
"You might say, well, I already have mouth flora and my own skin flora. But in reality, there are additional flora coming in ... and they have a chance to grow because of the nutrients from your backwash," he said.
Mmm, backwash and chemicals. Just what you want to think about as you do your best to stay hydrated.

A new project commissioned by Hyundai, British architect Asif Khan's 10-meter-high temporary building has been erected specifically for the Games, which officially begin on Friday, Feb. 9.
In what's being called "the darkest building on Earth," Khan's structure has employed a sprayable version of the ominous Vantablack pigment. Created by UK researchers in 2014 and trademarked by British artist Anish Kapoor(opens in a new tab), Vantablack is touted as the darkest known artificial substance in the world — it absorbs up to 99.965 percent of light that hits its surface.

The internets dunking on student loan debt complainers with PPP loan receipts
There are few things the internet enjoys more than collecting and dropping receipts. So it's natural folks went digging once the complaints of student loan debt forgiveness began popping up on our Twitter feeds. At their disposal? A searchable database of PPP loans forgiven(Opens in a new tab) by the government.
In case you missed it, President Biden announced(Opens in a new tab) Wednesday (Aug. 24) that the government would erase up to $20,000 of federal student loans for borrowers who met certain criteria. For instance, an individual making less than $125,000 would qualify for $10,000 in forgiveness and $10,000 more if you received a Pell Grant.
Certain people online, often conservatives, were quick to denounce the plan. The "this you" tweets began flooding as soon as people started criticizing the plan. Republican members of Congress who took Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans, for instance, were instant targets.

It's worth noting, of course, the PPP loans and student loans are not exactly the same. The PPP loans were given to people and businesses during the worst of the pandemic — even if, sometimes, those who didn't necessarily need the money received it. But there is some irony in people condemning taking government loan forgiveness in some instances but being angry when others do the same.
It all goes to show that on the internet everyone is always looking for receipts. As always, tweet at your own risk.
