The search for Michael Scott’s Hawaiian shirt from The Office

Like any good mystery, my endless journey began innocently enough. Neo taking a phone call. Lebowski and a piss-soaked rug. Alice falling down the rabbit-hole.

The search for Michael Scott’s Hawaiian shirt from The Office(图1)

I was watching TV, and I tweeted. (Both things I do too much.) That simple tweet would lead me to years of messages, random Reddit threads, and Instagram DMs with a costume warehouse.

The mystery in question? A Hawaiian shirt that I simply needed to find. But not just any Hawaiian shirt. Michael Scott's Hawaiian shirt from The Office's Season 3 episode "The Convention." It's orange and floral, a resplendent piece of Microsoft Office merchandise.

Here's the tweet I sent all the way back in 2019.

See, I am a connoisseur(Opens in a new tab) of Hawaiian shirts(Opens in a new tab) — long before they back in fashion — and a somewhat obsessive fan of The Office. OK "somewhat" is an understatement: I basically wrote a book while ranking every episode for Mashable.

This shirt was my white whale. But I didn't realize a screenshot, plus "my kingdom to anyone who can locate," would take years to (kinda sorta) resolve.

SEE ALSO: All 185 episodes of 'The Office,' ranked

When the tweet got a few likes, I decided to actually look for it. It started simple. I messaged the Microsoft Office(Opens in a new tab) and Microsoft company store(Opens in a new tab) accounts on Facebook. No dice. Not even a response. Now, to be clear, at this point I wasn't even reporting a story. I just really wanted that beautiful shirt and was doing my best to locate it. This was a personal journey.

Over the next few days, I began reaching out to my network, until a friend of mine, similarly obsessed with my quest, suggested I get in touch with the show's costume designer. Carey Bennett(Opens in a new tab), who worked on The Office for its first four seasons, gave me some good clues about the origin of the shirt. At the time, it had been more than a decade since the episode had been shot, but Bennett believed it was either something they created custom or, more likely, a free shirt gifted to the show's costume department from Microsoft.

"Oftentimes a piece is created from scratch or is a piece that’s been altered or enhanced, which is what I originally thought was the case with this shirt," Bennett wrote in an email in 2019. "The more I thought about it though ([it's] been many years since I designed that show!) I think I remember that it had been given to us by Microsoft. We had a ton of promotional products given to us by various companies for that episode. After trying many choices we decided that Michael would definitely choose to wear the free 'schwag.'"

That's the thing, Bennett said, every single stitch of clothing on a show is purposeful. "Each scene is like a painting and has to be composed with color and texture," they said.

I threaded this bit of news under my original tweets about the shirt and moved on with my life. I loved the shirt but felt like I had hit a bit of a dead end. Even though I stopped my search, I thought a lot about why I even loved the shirt in the first place.

That 2006 episode, titled "The Convention," is what I deemed the show's 28th best half-hour in my Office opus. And it's also one of my favorite episodes to rewatch. In it, Michael Scott (played by Steve Carell) twists into a pretzel of anxiety in some corporate Philly hotel that's hosting an office supplies convention. Michael is trying his best to play it cool around Jim, who transferred to the competing Stamford branch after his big swing to win over Pam failed. So Michael puts up a front around Jim, wearing this wonderfully cheesy convention swag while blasting awful techno music and sipping a cosmo in his hotel room. It's a great scene — funny at first, then heartfelt as Jim reaches out to Michael, who's hurting and perpetually lonely.

That's all well and good, but my love for the shirt comes down to Carell's 'fit. The Dad Jeans with the floppy Hawaiian shirt tucked in: The man was ahead of his time. And I want to copy that exact outfit. It is the perfect mix of my fashion sense and my favorite show. But at this point in time, it didn't seem possible to find.

Then a funny thing happened. I kept receiving tweets — like at least once a week — about this damn shirt. I'm talking a tweet a week for years. Somehow, my tweet appears at the top of Google when you search for the shirt, alongside a few Reddit(Opens in a new tab) threads. People asked me if I had found it. No, I'd say. Another person would ask. Nope. Rinse and repeat. Clearly, I was not alone. The DMs never stopped. I stopped replying, but I didn't forget.

As more time passed, and the tweets kept coming, live moved on. I joined Mashable, the pandemic started, I got married, adopted a dog, and moved twice. Yet, the shirt remained in the back of my head the entire time.

So, a years later, I rededicated myself to finding it — for content, yes, but also for my own peace of mind. First, I asked Bennett if they remembered anything else about the shirt's origins. No luck. Then, I turned to Universal. The show filmed on the Universal Studios lot throughout its run, and Universal was also involved in the production and distribution of The Office. Bennett had suggested that if the shirt lived anywhere, it was "most likely lost in the enormous costume warehouse" at Universal Studios. I found an Instagram account(Opens in a new tab) associated with the costume department, sent a message in July, and hoped for the best. The account hardly posts, so I didn't think they'd respond. However, after about a month, they got back to me and promised to search their archives. Holy shit, I thought, while pondering the journalist ethics of asking to buy the shirt if they found it. I also checked my bank account to see how much I'd willingly spend.

As it turns out, I should have been preparing for heartbreak.

"We checked with our Archives team and unfortunately that is not a shirt we have in our inventory," the account wrote back.

Undeterred, I immediately checked in with Microsoft. A representative got back to me quickly, saying, "We’re looking into it! It might be tricky to track down." After a few follow-ups, they told me it was a busy time for the company and to check back in a few weeks later. (Honestly, that's kind of a fair, considering this was a rather silly quest.)

Before we go any further, a point of order: There are knockoffs out there for purchase. Nothing against the knockoffs, but this offering from Vinco(Opens in a new tab) is a clear replica. It's not the correct material, the design is a bit off, and it's sold on a website I wouldn't immediately trust.

My hope was to find the shirt, or at least its origins. If this was a bit of free gear for Microsoft employees, for instance, I'd want one from a Microsoft worker's attic. If it was a one-off for the show... at least I'd have an answer of some sort.

Well, I have good news and bad news. I have arrived, years later, at about half of an answer. Microsoft did get back to me with some notes from its archives team.

"The Microsoft Office shirt featured in the Office TV show appears to be custom for the episode and character," a representative wrote in an email.

In other words, they believe it was a one-off creation for the show. The team linked out to a post(Opens in a new tab) on the subreddit r/DunderMifflin from about a year ago. It wasn't a super popular post but the user, u/dontthroworanges(Opens in a new tab), seemed to have found an unaltered version of the shirt.

The Reddit user wrote:

I found the shirt with a bit of info and a cool story. So I too had been looking for this shirt for years. Dead end after dead end. Until... I came across some high resolution photos posted on Getty from this episode in where you could barely make our [sic] the brand and logo of the manufacturer of the shirt. So I stared at it for a while and made the discovery it's an "Eagle Dry Goods Signature Series" shirt. In doing some basic searching of the brand they primarily dealt I'm [sic] promotional products hence why Microsoft used them for this swag. So, then I hopped on eBay and bang! There it was in all it's glory. The shirt I had been looking for for so long. A few clicks later and the shirt was mine.

Reddit(Opens in a new tab)

There it was. Just like that. Someone had gotten to it before me. I fired up Getty Images, and this appears to be the image in question. If you zoom in and focus, you can just barely make out the brand name.

God, I want this shirt. Credit: Justin Lubin/NBCU Photo Bank/NBCUniversal via Getty Images via Getty Images

When you Google "Eagle Dry Goods Signature Series," you don't get much. It appears to be either a brand within the company Uniforms USA(Opens in a new tab) or a brand sold by the company back in the day. Uniforms USA makes workwear. Online, I found a digital copy of the 2008 Eagle Dry Goods catalogue(Opens in a new tab) through Uniforms USA, which on Page 39 has a very, very familiar looking shirt.

Familiar, no? Credit: Uniforms USA

The design, called the "seaside camp shirt," appears to be the exact same as Michael's Hawaiian shirt in the episode. It's tough to tell if the color matches exactly. It's worth noting this catalogue came out well after "The Convention" would've filmed, so Michael's shirt might've been an outdated colorway by 2008.

I've reached out to both Reddit user dontthroworanges, as well as Uniform USA, for further details but have yet to receive a response. I'll update down the line if I hear back. But at this point, there's not too much else to uncover. It's clear the shirt in The Office was made by Eagle Dry Goods. Unfortunately, if there are any more of the camp shirts floating around out in the ether, they're not for sale on eBay or elsewhere.

This all seems to suggest that Microsoft's theory was correct. Maybe someone found a Hawaiian shirt that Michael would wear, plastered it with a Microsoft Office logo, and off they went. It also seems possible Microsoft PR made a few of these and sent them out. The exact origin remains a bit unclear.

In short: I still don't have the shirt. Disappointing, I know.

Now, the good news: I do have a knockoff. After years of searching, my brother bit the bullet for me and bought a replica off a questionable site.

Close, but not 100 percent. Credit: Mashable

The material is polyester and spandex. It feels sort of like a swimsuit but it is light, which will be nice in the summer. The color seems similar to Michael's shirt, as does the design. But it's just not the same. All in all, not a bad knockoff. It would make a great Halloween costume or a summer 'fit at the beach in late August.

To be clear, I'm not giving up my search just because I have a knockoff. I emailed the Office Ladies podcast (Opens in a new tab)asking for help — hosts Angela Kinsey and Jenna Fischer, who played Angela and Pam, respectively, love investigating these sorts of weird things from their show. I'd also love to hear from anyone and everyone who might have a clue. (Here's looking at you, Steve Carell.)

That's what I've got for now: a knockoff and half an answer. Even after years of looking and sending countless messages, I still cannot escape Michael Scott's Hawaiian shirt.

The celebrity COVID calendar meme is here and its bleak as hell

A whole new slew of horrors comes with each month of 2020, and those horrors inspire some hilariously sad memes.

    (图1)

There's been depressing and relatable memes about Zoom fatigue and losing all concept of time, and now, thanks to Reese Witherspoon, a new 2020 mood meme is making the rounds on Twitter.

The meme, which I refer to as a "2020 Mood of the Month Forecast," shows a grid of nine photos. Each photo is labeled with a month of the year, and in the photos get increasingly more dramatic as time passes.

The January photo is all well and good. The February photo shows a spark of concern. And from March to September, everything visibly goes downhill. (It's unclear why the meme ends after September, but we're hoping it's not a sign that the world will be ending before October.)

Here's Witherspoon's meme, which features photos from her various movies and TV shows.

SEE ALSO: 'My X? Y' memes are ridiculously simple and delightful

After Witherspoon tweeted her emotional forecast, her pals Mindy Kaling and Kerry Washington jumped on board, and it wasn't long before the format began to trend. Though some people have started making their own personal versions of the meme, others are creating ones inspired by their favorite actors, TV shows, or movie characters.

Go forth and meme your 2020, everyone. It's a small and silly coping method, sure, but at least it will distract you for a few minutes.

Guy Fieri is a man of many talents, and one of those talents is his ability to post some of the best memes online.

For years, Fieri has been using his social media accounts to make fans of Flavortown and the Food Network laugh. With help from his team (known as Knuckle Sandwich) and his sons, Hunter and Ryder, Guy cranks out hilarious, timely, and trendy memes that perfectly embody his personal brand.

We're huge fans of Guy's memes at Mashable, which is why we were thrilled to learn that the celebrity chef created new Twitter (@flavortown(Opens in a new tab)) and Instagram (@flavortownusa(Opens in a new tab)) accounts specifically to post memes and share his merch.

On Thursday, Fieri announced his new meme accounts by tweeting a Netflix/Fieri crossover meme, along with the words, "Are you still watching 'The Memes of Flavortown'? Up next, @flavortown(Opens in a new tab)."

The meme features Guy-related parodies of popular television shows like Breaking Bad, Friends, and Fieri's personal favorite, The Office. (It's worth noting that Fieri's Office parody is called The Kitchen, and is described as an American mockumentary sitcom that follows the daily lives of kitchen employees in the "Flavortown branch of Dunder Fieri Food Company." Absolutely amazing.)

So far, the @flavortown Twitter account has posted some of Fieri's online merch(Opens in a new tab), along with three early, very good memes. And in a personal Instagram story, Fieri announced, "There's a new meme account on the block," and tagged @nocontextguyfieri(Opens in a new tab), @postironicmemevault(Opens in a new tab), @whichguyareyou, and @wheresguyfieri(Opens in a new tab).

The Flavortown accounts are starting to repost and reply to fans, so if you want to show Guy some love now's the time to do it.

At the time of writing this post the Flavortown meme Twitter and Instagram account both have about 4,000 followers. We know Guy has more fans than that, so it's time the Flavortown residents start showing up for their mayor.

Pornhubs trick to shed light on the orgasm gap may leave some men a little... blue

Welcome to Porn Week, Mashable's annual close up on the business and pleasure of porn.

    (图1)

Knowledge of the orgasm gap(Opens in a new tab) isn't new but, unsurprisingly, it's still very real. For cisheterosexual couples, men typically orgasm 95 percent of the time, but for women that number drops to 65 percent(Opens in a new tab), according to a 2016 study from the Archives of Sexual Behavior.

This is why on the weekend of August 8, which is International Female Orgasm Day(Opens in a new tab), Pornhub and creative agency Bar Ogilvy plan to bring awareness to this discrepancy. The tube site will interrupt their videos most viewed by straight men at the 40 percent timestamp — to highlight how approximately 40 percent of cishet women don't orgasm during sex with their partners.

"Researchers demystified the female orgasm decades ago by highlighting the importance of clitoral stimulation and foreplay for women to reach The Big O," said Corey Price, VP of Pornhub in a press release. "Yet, in straight relationships, women are still getting the short end of the stick in nearly half of all of their sexual encounters."

In addition to interrupting videos, Pornhub also asks women to go to the campaign landing page(Opens in a new tab) endtheorgasmgap.com and "reward" men who made them orgasm with an official certificate. Kind of like Awards for Good Boys(Opens in a new tab) but without a trace of irony.

"In a time when women are working towards equality on many fronts, the orgasm gap struck us as a somewhat overlooked matter. This proved to be very motivating for our creative team," said Nuno Riça and João Amaral, creative directors at Bar Ogilvy, in a press release. "And with Pornhub’s reputation of tackling so many important issues, this was just as 'on brand' as it gets."

"The party shouldn’t end as soon as the man reaches orgasm, which is why we're encouraging straight men to do their research to ensure everyone gets over the finish line," said Price. "For visual learners, you can check out one of the thousands of female orgasm instructional videos on our site."

  • Weve entered the breakup phase of lockdown romances

Weve entered the breakup phase of lockdown romances

It seemed like the perfect match.

    (图1)

Me, him, and a pandemic that forced us to spend four months getting to know each other.

In many ways it felt like an IRL version of Love Is Blind, the show where people get to know each other through opaque screens, often developing feelings before laying eyes on the object of their affection. I was spending lockdown at my parents' house in Warwickshire, and he was in London.

For a while, I felt like a 19th century woman passing love notes to an interested suitor. It had all been a refreshing break from the exhaustingly fast-paced culture of on-demand dating apps and the requests to meet up the very same day as matching with someone. Here, I had the luxury of truly getting to know someone without the pressure of meeting up lest they lose interest and swipe on to someone new.

After months of non-stop messaging, lockdown restrictions began to lift and we decided to finally meet in person. My nerves were a mess on the day of the date, I was so worried there'd be no spark. Those fears, it turns out, were justified.

When we met, I didn't feel that same connection we'd had over message. I felt silly that I had constructed an idea of a person in my mind that didn't live up to reality. Perhaps I should have done a virtual date with him, but truthfully I felt too socially awkward and nervous to try that. But once that silliness subsided, I felt a huge wave of sadness. Dating in a pandemic brings a mire of complications — from being harassed by online matches wanting to flout guidelines and hook up, to knowing when (if ever!) it's safe to actually kiss the person(Opens in a new tab) you've been messaging for weeks or months. Frankly, the prospect of diving back into the cesspit that is dating right now fills me with complete dread.

SEE ALSO: Virtual dating FOMO is real. But don't feel pressured if it's not for you.

When I spoke to my therapist about how I was feeling, she told me I needed to treat it like a breakup — that my feelings of sadness were only natural after being involved (albeit over WhatsApp) with someone for four months. Prior to that, I didn't really feel like I had the right to feel anything because the "relationship" essentially amounted to being someone's lockdown penpal.

Now that restrictions are beginning to lift, people have been meeting up with the people they dated virtually during lockdown. And not all 'turbo relationships' were built to last. We've now entered the breakup phase of our lockdown love stories.

Not all 'turbo relationships' were built to last.

Maddie, who prefers to use her first name only, had been chatting online with a guy she'd gone on one date with prior to lockdown. But one week before restrictions lifted, she started to get the "ick" factor. "He booked an entire weekend in London, we met up and realised I didn’t fancy him at all!" she tells me. Maddie had fancied him on the first date, and that attraction grew the more they chatted over the next months. "But by the time it came to meeting up with him, I literally couldn’t stand to be near him," she says. "Felt terrible but you can’t help how you feel I guess."

Maddie puts her feelings down to not having "the whole picture of him" and not knowing him well enough. She feels that lockdown created feelings and an attraction that wasn't actually there, and as soon as restrictions lifted, she didn't fancy him anymore. "I think he realised I had become less keen and booked a whole weekend in London in an Airbnb which I felt was a bit forced and rushed," she says. "He was very sweet and had clearly tried to be romantic but you know when you’re not feeling it and it can’t be pulled back."

Allie, who prefers to use her first name only, also experienced a lockdown love fizzle. "At the very start of lockdown, back in March, I started dating this guy virtually and we spent over three weeks talking for hours every day on video chat and having virtual dates," she explains. "We were both really excited to meet up but then lockdown was extended and we also had an argument that same week, so it fizzled out."

The relationship didn't end on good terms, sadly, but Allie still thinks about him. "We spent around three hours every night talking and we were both quite invested in it, with us both teasing each other about who would fall in love first." Allie and her lockdown lover never met up in person in the end, which she feels quite sad about.

So, are we just unlucky in love, or is this genuinely A Thing? According to Match's dating expert, Hayley Quinn, the pandemic has brought about a variety of different relationship types, and crucially, a breakup phase.

"Whether it's the relationship of convenience that was struck up during social distancing, or the relationship that moved at light speed to 'self-isolate' together, with more freedom available in our dating lives now, we ask whether these relationships go the distance," says Quinn. "Chances are if you developed a relationship out of circumstance more than choice, now will be your exit cue."

"Chances are if you developed a relationship out of circumstance more than choice, now will be your exit cue."

Some of the relationship types referenced by Quinn might sound familiar to a few of you. There's the Extended Courtship, which is basically a good old-fashioned slow dating scenario. "Long video calls and socially distanced dates mean that courtship is back," she says. Then, of course, there's the Social Bubble Exclusive. "Forget asking someone to ‘go steady,’ says Quinn. "Now, it’s all about asking ‘do you want to form a social bubble?’" Then there's the Distraction. "Whether it’s texting your ex or justifying that casual hook up with your next-door neighbour, relationships have been struck up to pass the time," says Quinn. "Convenience, comfort, and ‘better the devil you know’ might seem like a good idea on a lonely Friday night but it’s important to steer clear of these short term fixes if you want to start something real."

Not all lockdown breakups end in tears, though. Cristina, who prefers to use her first name only, managed to turn her pandemic relationship into something with a happy ending. "The one guy that I deemed my COVID boyf and I are basically meme sending friends now," she explains. "We went on a bunch of walks and we used this dog that we met as an excuse to keep meeting up," she adds. But in the end, the relationship felt more platonic than romantic. Cristina received a message from him essentially saying he just wanted "cool people to hang out with" in a friendship sense.

"It upset me at first, but then I really thought about if it were going to work out or if he was the type I was looking for and felt better," says Cristina. She ended up going on a picnic date with someone else afterward and felt much more excited about that prospect. "It’s one of those, good for the time being (since we all love attention!) until something better (or in this case, more aligned to what I’m looking for) came along," she says.

We are living through scary, uncertain, and lonely times. It makes total sense that many of us used lockdown to find long-lasting connection with someone else. Dating has always been hit and miss, so take heart, and don't dwell too much. 'Twas ever thus: You win some, you lose some.

The year 2020 just got a whole lot darker thanks to Fisher-Price.

The popular infant, toddler, and children's toy company released a new line of products inspired by the many adults working from home in quarantine. And though the mini home office, workout, and cooking playsets are undeniably cute, they're also bleak as hell.

On Wednesday, Fisher-Price's parent company, Mattel, announced(Opens in a new tab) the WFH-inspired lineup of "'mini-me' and role-play items" that aim to turn essential adult activities, such as going to work, exercising, and cooking meals, into toys so they can partake in the fun work, too.

"Our designers created these toys based on some of the most popular themes in social media, including #food and #fitness," Chuck Scothon, Senior Vice President of Fisher-Price (and Mattel's Global Head of Infant and Preschool) noted in the blog post.

If you want a business baby in the house, we recommend the My Home Office Set(Opens in a new tab) (featured above), which is available for $24.99. It includes a laptop with four "apps," along with a smartphone, a headset for important baby calls, and even a cup of coffee. Every baby's dream!

There's no denying that these WFH-inspired toys are adorable, but under different circumstances they might have been more appealing. Seeing the toys released in the middle of a global pandemic, when so many people still have no idea how long they'll be working from home, frequently cooking, or doing home workouts, is a little depressing. The toys are cute, but the thought of kids playing with tiny versions of our sad WFH setups is most certainly not.

If you're looking for more adult-inspired toys for your children, however, Fisher-Price also sells a pizza teether(Opens in a new tab), a coffee cup teether(Opens in a new tab), a Taco Tuesday™ set(Opens in a new tab), a Rice ‘n Roll Sushi set(Opens in a new tab), a charcuterie set(Opens in a new tab), and a home garden set(Opens in a new tab).

We have to admit, the charcuterie set looks dope. And quarantine seems like the perfect time to teach your baby a crucial life skill like how to nicely arrange salami, cheese, crackers, and grapes on a cutting board.

Herman Cain is tweeting from beyond the grave and people are very confused

I pray that when I die — God-willing, many years from now — I no longer tweet. Please, I beg, let death at least release me from posting.

    (图1)

Herman Cain, who died less than two weeks ago, however, is still tweeting. And everyone is confused by that strange fact.

OK, obviously Cain — the former Republican candidate for president who died in July(Opens in a new tab) after being hospitalized with COVID-19 — was not actually tweeting. But his account responded to the news that former Vice President Joe Biden had selected California Sen. Kamala Harris as a running mate on the 2020 Democratic presidential ticket.

"Just in case you thought Biden's candidacy was going to be anything other than completely nuts, team Trump has released a new video," Cain's account posted on Wednesday.

At the time, Cain's account still had his photo and used the politician's name as its display name. It has since made clear the message was coming from a group called "The Cain Gang" and not Herman Cain himself (obviously).

Dr. Melanie Cain Gallo, Cain's daughter, posted on his website that the family intended to continue using their late father's platform. Thus, the tweet.

"We’ve decided here at Cain HQ that we will go on using this platform to share the information and ideas he believed in," Gallo wrote(Opens in a new tab). "He often talked about the site going on once he was ready to step away from it. We had hoped he could enjoy reading it in his retirement, but he made it clear he wanted it to go on."

Still, folks were... let's say... curious... that Cain's account was attacking Democrats even after he died.

Despite the confused response from lots of people, Cain's account kept on posting. Come Friday the rebranded "Cain Gang" was lobbing attacks(Opens in a new tab) at Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and retweeting(Opens in a new tab) Rudy Giuliani.

    2020 is very strange.

  • The art of the porn GIF

The art of the porn GIF

Welcome to Porn Week, Mashable's annual close up on the business and pleasure of porn.

    (图1)

When the GIF became the internet’s preferred visual language, it simultaneously became the preferred lust language for many consumers of adult entertainment.

Porn GIFs distill any variety of adult video into a looping image that can last from mere seconds to a full minute. But the short-form format isn’t all that’s unique about porn GIFs. Many of the folks we talked to — from aficionados to NSFW GIF creators themselves — say it is by far their favorite, if not their only, form of porn consumption, and for good reason.

“The perfect GIF is the climax of a certain porn scene or video, e.g., where an actor unclasps their bra to reveal their breasts, or pulls down their briefs to reveal a throbbing penis, or the moment where full penetration occurs,” said Reddit user SparklyRen(Opens in a new tab), a lawyer in his late 20s who identifies as gay and moderates various subreddits like r/GayPorn(Opens in a new tab) and r/GayGifs(Opens in a new tab) (currently at 92,000 members). “GIFs are hyper-sexual bursts of media.”

“Something about a GIF is like pop music or fast food: instantly consumable.”

While seemingly simple, making porn GIFs requires its own kind of craft. You not only need to be proficient with certain editing tools, but also patient enough to search for videos that will translate well into the GIF format. On top of all that, you need to have a good eye for deliciously succinct sexiness.

“I've been making porn GIFs for over five years now, and I think it's the best way to express and share my sexual desires creatively,” said the Footprince, who runs the Sockfetishgifs Twitter account(Opens in a new tab) (often crossposted to r/socksgonewild(Opens in a new tab)), despite identifying as asexual himself. Not all porn GIFs, for the record, need mass appeal; they often thrive because they serve niche tastes and sexualities that tube sites don't cater to.

“Something about a GIF is like pop music or fast food: instantly consumable,” said Reddit user 88Remmer(Opens in a new tab), who moderates several of the most popular porn GIF subreddits, like r/bestporngifs(Opens in a new tab) (currently at 175,000 members). “I think people also love them because they’re usually easy to watch on-the-go in the smartphone age, and they’re usually small, data-wise, so you can save the ones you like.”

For many porn GIFers, part of the appeal is also growing your own little collection of favorites you can always come back to for a quick and easy self-love session.

Beyond format, what really makes porn GIFs such a unique genre of adult entertainment is how their popularity has been kept alive through dedicated communities that continue to make the genre thrive in new ways.

SEE ALSO: The best alternatives to Pornhub and Xvideos

“The porn GIF is mostly a social thing,” said the Digital Pimp, who runs websites like Gifsfor(Opens in a new tab) and Gifporntube(Opens in a new tab). “Adult communities love to post and trade them with one another. It gets people talking, rather than watching a video alone and just getting off.” Beyond that, the social aspect, “is great because you have the possibility to discover more content you didn't know about.”

That was especially true with Tumblr, the platform that originally popularized the porn GIF. You could endlessly scroll through an account that fit your taste or hashtags that introduced you to new types of porn. At least, before Tumblr torpedoed itself by banning all adult content from the platform.

But the legacy of the porn GIF continues today, primarily through dozens of subreddits, many of which boast hundreds of thousands of members. Of course, there are also dedicated websites like the Digital Pimp’s, as well as Redgifs(Opens in a new tab), essentially a NSFW Giphy. But the porn GIF format has proven so powerful that it basically created a whole subgenre of short-and-to-the-point adult entertainment, which has infiltrated far more mainstream social media platforms than Reddit or Tumblr — like Twitter.

“Small porn videos or snippets are essentially an evolved form of the GIF,” said the Digital Pimp. “When we talk of GIFs, we aren't really talking about just .gif files anymore. It's .mp4, and whatever else. Some even have sound now.”

The porn GIF niche might take up less time and digital space than a full-length video. But clearly, its impact is greater than its file size.

Where the porn GIF lives: Past, present, and future

The rise of the porn GIF can almost entirely be attributed back to Tumblr, with the platform’s unfortunate censorship leaving a hole that no other has yet been able to entirely fill.

Sparklyren vividly remembers the first porn GIF he ever encountered on Tumblr. He’s kept it saved in his personal files, transferring it from phone to phone over the years out of sheer sentimentality. It shows three extremely strapped young men pleasuring each other and themselves on a brightly lit marble kitchen countertop.

    It is, indeed, very hot.

“My world was changed after I first saw GIFs on Tumblr. I certainly think that it changed the game for porn, too. It added a new, different dimension,” he said. “What makes GIFs so perfect in today's age of fast consumerism is that they're so bite-size. Tumblr's timeline was busy! And it was built upon endless scrolling, which means that you had to hook your audience and followers within the first instant.”

The Tumblr porn GIF didn’t make you trudge through any cheesy storylines or cringe-y forced setups. It immediately engaged you, earning people's reblogs and upvotes by being universally tantalizing. It’s a format that fits the fast pace of internet culture way better than regular, full-length porn videos — which seem like a relic of the past, when XXX adult VHS tapes were the most high-tech method of getting off.

“The best part about GIFs is they're usually repeating the most interesting parts of the porn they're sourced from,” said the Footprince. “Most people who like cumshots aren't going to want to sit through six minutes of cheesy dialogue to see seven seconds of climax. That's what I like the most about it: They’re essentially highlights in full motion.”

Ease of use and brevity are, undoubtedly, at the heart of porn GIFs' lasting appeal. But they don’t just save you time and effort. On Tumblr, they were a refinement of the often inelegant material of full-length porn, creating almost elevated adult entertainment experience.

Porn GIFs focus mostly on the, for lack of a better term, good stuff,” said one avid Tumblr porn GIF consumer who will go by Alex (not their real name), and identifies as a non-binary demisexual.

Funnily enough, Alex could also immediately summon to mind the name of their favorite Tumblr porn account — italiansd0itbetter(Opens in a new tab) (which now appears to live on through Twitter(Opens in a new tab)) — though it’s been years since they visited. “On Tumblr, I didn’t have to scrub through 10 minutes of footage for a nice shot, or the good angle, or past the unfortunate angle of some dude's balls. It was just: Here’s a curated selection of five GIFS that are only the good parts.”

The fact that porn GIFs are predominantly shared on platforms that aren’t actually porn websites is another part of what makes them more appealing to folks who might be intimidated or otherwise put off by sites like Pornhub. “There are no ads, no buffering times, no surprisingly loud audio,” the Footprince summed up.

Also, Tumblr was a platform predominantly made up of women and LGBTQ folks, which made it a safe place for them to enjoy porn(Opens in a new tab) in a way they couldn't on mainstream tube porn sites. Alex wouldn’t say that, on the whole, Tumblr porn GIFs were all that different from traditional porn. Rather, it’s that LGBTQ and women-oriented porn had more of a platform there, where searches for Trouble Films(Opens in a new tab) (a trans porn studio) and “queer porn” proved far more fruitful than anywhere else on the internet at the time.

“Porn communities, and by extension, porn GIF communities, definitely lost a sense of place when Tumblr was censored.”

“Tumblr GIF porn is where I encountered a lot of gay porn for the first time — specifically, the cockyboys imprint, which was very popular, and the kink stuff associated with Mormon Boyz,” said Alex. Others agreed, seeing GIF porn and specifically the Tumblr platform as better suited to exploring more niche and various types of porn.

“Porn communities, and by extension, porn GIF communities, definitely lost a sense of place when Tumblr was censored,” said Sparklyren. He was forced to turn mostly to Twitter and Reddit, though he revisits Tumblr from time-to-time for the softcore stuff it still allows. “GIFs are truly difficult to get a hold of nowadays after the big Tumblr scourge,” he said. Which is why he's had to resort to searching for raw footage that he could use to create and continue the legacy of NSFW GIFs on his own.

For Alex, though, the Tumblr crackdown has made it near-impossible to enjoy the format anymore.

“There isn’t an easy way to search or anything. I tried Bing (no joke) because I heard their porn search was better. But it wasn’t,” they said. “I tend to look up animated porn or ‘Snapchat’ on porn Tube sites to watch there now, where it’s that shorter snippet-style porn.”

The death of Tumblr inevitably led to Reddit becoming the predominant home for porn GIF communities, but it has its own drawbacks. Both Sparklyren and 88Remmer mourn the lack of endless scrolling, since Reddit requires users actually click on GIFs before they play. But both have found admittedly imperfect workarounds. Sparklyren suggests the Apollo Reddit iOS app, which autoplays GIFs and recreates a bit of the Tumblr vibe. 88Remmer said Redgifs attempts endless scrolling, too, but is plagued by freezing issues.

For Sparklyren, Twitter is the lesser of substitutes for Tumblr because it doesn’t have as strict a time limit as Reddit, which caps a GIF to his preferred one-minute length. “I still find myself scrolling past many Twitter videos, even though they might only be two minutes long,” he said.

That’s why, “at the moment, I do think Reddit is a perfect platform for GIFs, mainly based on its support for many media file types. I like Reddit's upvoting system, too, as it attributes a clear ‘score’ of how good a GIF is.”

Unfortunately, the displacement of porn GIFs from Tumblr onto more mainstream platforms like Reddit and Twitter has also led a lot of the most popular content to become, well, more normie.

“There are subreddits for certain fetishes, but they rarely seem to dominate in subreddit size or upvotes. It seems that the general population’s tastes are kinda vanilla,” said 88Remmer.

“Vanilla porn GIFs definitely perform better,” said Sparklyren. He also doesn’t love that gay porn GIFs are still very catered to a heteronormative gaze, with “gay-for-pay” heterosexual performers the main LGBTQ representation in mainstream adult entertainment. In general, it remains difficult to bring more diversity to the palette of porn GIF subreddits, because GIF makers are limited to what’s available through Tube porn sites.

“Once porn studios diversify their rosters, I hope it will carry over to the types of porn GIFs we see — more Black content, more trans content, more for women,” he said.

At the same time, Sparklyren is heartened by the fact that there’s a GIF subreddit for almost every taste, fetish, or niche. Also, he pointed out, the r/PornGifs and r/GayGifs subreddits have almost the exact same number of subscribers.

Sparklyren also noted that, even though there are dedicated subreddits to GIF porn specifically, “Other porn subreddits welcome GIFs, and in most cases, GIFs are the top-performing posts on those pages. If that isn't proof of the power of the porn GIF, then I don't know what is.”

Another interesting phenomenon to come out of the porn GIF's legacy (that will likely define its future) is how the snippet porn style not only jumped onto Twitter, but also intersected with OnlyFans. OnlyFans is a platform where subscribers pay sex workers and (some of who began as regular influencers) money directly for their adult content.

“Porn stars are actually starting to post their own homemade GIFs as well, so it’s an excellent tool for self-promotion,” said 88Remmer. That’s part of the reason he always makes sure to credit and link out to the full video source he pulled his GIFs from when posting them on Reddit.

Sparklyren doesn’t love OnlyFans itself as a platform precisely because it’s hard to organically find and discover fetishes or performers that will fit your tastes. But he commends performers like Reno Gold, who understand the importance of doing self-promotion on other platforms in conjunction with OnlyFans, fixing the lack of discoverability by utilizing the porn GIF format.

“He knows exactly which 10-second portion of his OnlyFans scenes to upload to Twitter in order to get consumers to subscribe. That is not easy,” he praised.

In general, community remains at the hearts of what makes the porn GIF such a singular, long-lasting genre of adult entertainment — no matter where it ultimately lives.

“The porn GIF is not going away any time soon, because porn communities are a great thing that I hope continue to thrive and allow more people to be liberal and not feel judged about something that we all enjoy,” said the Digital Pimp.

The precise science of the perfect porn GIF

Within the porn GIF genre, there are a variety of subgenres, which speaks to just how much creators influence and shape porn GIFs through craftsmanship.

According to 88Remmer, there's the style that's essentially a minute-long summary of videos, cutting together different positions before landing on the money shot. The other common style, which he prefers, scrubs through porn videos to find the single best moment, which they then work to turn into the perfect GIF.

“I like to think of it as ‘One Hot Minute,’ like the Red Hot Chili Peppers album,” he said. "Even in a mediocre scene, there is always at least one minute when it all comes together: the chemistry between the actors, lighting, proper cam positioning. That's what a good GIF captures,” he said. Also, “I noticed that the best one-minute edits often feel longer than a minute. That’s all about finding the one hot minute and augmenting it with editing tricks like cropping or scene cutting, making it quick and consumable by emphasizing the hottest parts.”

For the Footprince, the best porn GIF has three requirements: good color/lighting, smooth as butter frame rate, and replay value with a hypnotic effect.

“What I find so incredible is the porn GIF's permeability. It has infiltrated absolutely every medium that allows it."

“The perfect loop is still being discussed to this very day,” he said. But part of the creativity of being a porn GIF maker is working within the very restrictive limits of file size allowances across each platform. Twitter has one of the bigger ones, allowing for 15mb. But the Footprince believes the 5-6mb range is better for the sake of quicker uploads on the consumer's side.

“My rule of thumb is the three seconds of gold,” he said. “If I find something very dope, I try to cut it down to 3 seconds and go from there. if it's longer, I can edit in workarounds to make the file smaller.”

Despite the loss of Tumblr, the porn GIF is still only growing more popular according to our sources. The Footprince believes this is in part due to the “boon of tools available to make GIFs today.” Before, you needed at least some basic video editing capabilities. But now, through mobile apps like Inshot, Gifmaker Editor, and Video Collage, “My phone is more powerful than my computer at making GIFs, which blows my mind.”

He believes that “we have yet to see the peak of creativity behind the creation of porn GIFs,” and hopes even more interesting things will be done with all the new software possibilities.

For Sparklyren, the power of the porn GIF speaks for itself after surviving so many years and so much restriction and censorship from various platforms.

“What I find so incredible is the porn GIF's permeability. It has infiltrated absolutely every medium that allows it. If a social media site allows porn and allows GIFs, you'll certainly find a huge porn GIF community on that platform. That’s a testament to the format's popularity,” he said. “The porn GIF will absolutely continue to thrive!"

People are really into the DNCs virtual roll call. Maybe it can stay?

It's just like Eurovision, but with more calamari.

The second day of the Democratic National Convention has wrapped up, and in a true sign of the times we’re in, Joe Biden was formally nominated as the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee in a virtual roll call.

Local delegates from 57 states and territories "called in" to officially nominate Biden via video message, with some elected Democrats and others members of the public nominated by their state to make the announcement. Running in alphabetical order starting with Alabama and ending with Biden's home state of Delaware right at the end, viewers were treated to a bona fide cornucopia of background staging choices behind each state representative.

The Eurovision Song Contest's been doing this type of thing for decades during the judging process, in which each country awards national competitors up to 12 points, with some being more strategic and political with their background imagery than others (seriously, it's a whole thing).

And while usually, the formal nomination of the presidential candidate at the DNC would take place within an event centre, with each member taking the stage in front of a crowd, social distancing caused this event to run online only. And people watching the virtual event were truly into it.

There were some truly moving moments during the nomination process. Alabama state Rep. Terri Sewell paid tribute to the late Congressman John Lewis, standing in front of the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, where Lewis and fellow members of the civil rights movement were attacked by police in 1965 while marching for their right to vote.

Charlottesville resident Khizr Khan, who made headlines challenging Donald Trump and offering up his copy of the Constitution at the 2016 DNC, was selected to cast Virginia's vote. There were also some interesting scenery choices, with the internet particularly enjoying Rhode Island state Rep. Reddit rejects moderators call for harsher measures against COVID-19 misinformation

Reddit's volunteer moderators have shared an open letter demanding the company ban subreddits dedicated to spreading COVID-19 misinformation. In response, Reddit co-founder and CEO Steve Huffman released the tech bro statement equivalent of a shrug emoji.

    (图1)

Posted Wednesday on subreddit r/vaxxhappened, the moderators' open letter(Opens in a new tab) calls Reddit out for allowing dangerous COVID-19 misinformation to thrive on its platform largely unchecked.

"It is clear that even after promising to tackle the problem of misinformation on this site(Opens in a new tab), nothing of substance has been done aside from quarantining a medium sized subreddit, which barely reduces traffic and does little to stop misinformation," the post read (emphasis in the original).

Among the signatories are the moderators for subreddits r/aww(Opens in a new tab), r/dataisbeautiful(Opens in a new tab), r/EarthPorn(Opens in a new tab), r/Futurology(Opens in a new tab), r/lifeprotips(Opens in a new tab), r/pics(Opens in a new tab), r/showerthoughts(Opens in a new tab), r/tifu(Opens in a new tab), and r/UpliftingNews(Opens in a new tab), all of which have over 10 million subscribers each.

Reputable health officials have continually stressed the importance of wearing a face mask amidst the coronavirus pandemic, as well as maintaining a safe distance from others and getting vaccinated as soon as possible. These are all scientifically proven strategies that literally save lives. Unfortunately, social networking platforms such as Reddit continue to host rhetoric rejecting such measures, allowing coronavirus misinformation to spread, multiply, and actively endanger people.

"Reddit as a global platform needs to take responsibility here."

"The main problem with a concerted disinformation campaign is that such a message attains an air of legitimacy through sheer volume of repetition," read the moderators' letter. "There can be no room for leniency when people are dying as a result of misinformation on this platform. Reddit as a global platform needs to take responsibility here.

"We are calling on the admins to take ownership of their website, and remove dangerous medical disinformation that is endangering lives and contributing to the existence of this ongoing pandemic. Subreddits which exist solely to spread medical disinformation and undermine efforts to combat the global pandemic should be banned."

SEE ALSO: Oh great, now Reddit wants to be TikTok too

It's an understandable request. If people are spreading falsehoods that are proven to directly result in serious illness and death, and you could limit their reach, basic decency demands that you'd do everything in your power to do so.

So, of course, Reddit has shrugged and declared the whole thing not their problem, because self-regulation has worked out so well thus far.

"While we appreciate the sentiment of those demanding that we ban more communities that challenge consensus views on the pandemic, we continue to believe in the good of our communities and hope that we collectively approach the challenges of the pandemic with empathy, compassion, and a willingness to understand what others are going through, even when their viewpoint on the pandemic is different from yours," wrote the company's CEO Huffman in Reddit's r/announcements subreddit(Opens in a new tab).

Apparently, as someone choosing to "continue to believe in the good of our communities," Huffman appears to have never used the internet.

Huffman blamed evolving CDC advice for Reddit's lacklustre policy, as though the contested content were just confusion-fuelled debates on what type of mask we should wear rather than rejection of masks altogether. He also stated that Reddit will take action against communities that violate the website's rules such as "encouraging harm (e.g. consuming bleach)," and offered the consolation that they'll continue quarantining subreddits(Opens in a new tab).

Quarantined subreddits have warnings that they could contain misinformation, are excluded from search results, and don't appear in non-subscription feeds such as Reddit's Popular posts. But Reddit has already been doing that for months(Opens in a new tab) — the whole point of the moderators' open letter is that it simply isn't enough.

Spreading anti-mask, anti-vaccination rhetoric actively encourages harm, especially considering COVID-19 is still killing thousands of people every day in the U.S. alone(Opens in a new tab). But it seems Reddit believes this harm isn't serious enough to warrant harsher action.

Reddit's empty platitudes and clear abdication of responsibility are disappointing, but not all that surprising. After all, it's much easier to step back and pretend you and your $10 billion company(Opens in a new tab) have absolutely no culpability in the 625,000 people in the U.S. who have died from COVID-19 to date.

When reached by Mashable for comment, a Reddit spokesperson reiterated that its self-regulation policy is a good thing, actually.

"Reddit is a place for open and authentic discussion and debate," said the spokesperson. "This includes conversations that question or disagree with popular consensus. We provide users with authoritative resources when viewing communities that may warrant additional scrutiny, and continue to action content and users that violate our policies.

"Throughout the pandemic, we have also provided COVID-related resources to support our volunteer moderators, users, and communities, including a dedicated AMA series connecting users with authoritative experts on coronavirus and vaccines, as well as deploying homepage and search page banners directing users to the CDC and r/Coronavirus."

Reddit declined to answer whether it considers anti-mask and anti-vaccine rhetoric amidst a deadly pandemic to be encouraging harm. On an entirely unrelated note, I'm starting a subreddit dedicated to telling people seatbelts and speed limits are a violation of their civil liberties, because apparently I can.

Were all crumpled up pieces of paper lying here as Twitter reacts to Red (Taylors Version)

Friday, Nov. 12, is a day to remember if you're a Swiftie — or just a person who uses the internet — because today, Taylor Swift released an expanded, re-recorded version of her seminal album Red.

    (图1)

Red (Taylor's Version) is part of her ongoing pursuit to regain ownership of her earlier work after Scooter Braun acquired Big Machine Records and seized control over the master recordings of her first six albums. Despite selling the master rights(Opens in a new tab) to Swift's catalog to a private equity firm in late 2020, the war between the singer-songwriter and the men who profit off her music still wages on, publicly.

To devalue the worth of her original masters, Swift announced she would simply re-record all of them to regain ownership. Red (Taylor's Version) is the second of her album re-recordings, following the release of Fearless (Taylor's Version) earlier this year.

"It never would have been possible to go back & remake my previous work, uncovering lost art & forgotten gems along the way if you hadn't emboldened me," Swift tweeted(Opens in a new tab). "Red is about to be mine again, but it has always been ours. Now we begin again."

The 30-track, 2-hour-long album received five stars from Rolling Stone(Opens in a new tab)(Opens in a new tab), which called her long-lost 10-minute version of "All Is Well" a "new heartbreak epic." Known as a breakup album, the music pinpoints a time in Swift's life when she was going through a highly publicized breakup with actor Jake Gyllenhaal, who undoubtedly is not having a great day today.

The internet is, in turn, rejoicing.

  • Thanksgiving grandma and accidental dinner invitee spend sixth holiday together

Thanksgiving grandma and accidental dinner invitee spend sixth holiday together

It's Thanksgiving, which means Jamal Hinton and Wanda Dench are celebrating the holiday together  — an annual tradition sparked five years ago by a viral text exchange.

    (图1)

The unlikely duo's tradition of enjoying the holiday together started in 2016, when Dench mistakenly sent a text message to Hinton inviting him to Thanksgiving dinner. The message had been meant for Dench's grandson, a mistake that her unintended recipient quickly discerned. However, once this was revealed, the then 59-year-old grandmother didn't seem bothered by the mixup at all. Rather, Dench responded to then 17-year-old Hinton's joking request for a plate with a sincere invitation to join them anyway.

The wholesome text exchange quickly went viral after Hinton posted it online. And the story got even better when Hinton decided to take Dench up on her offer.

Meeting up with a random stranger you've only exchanged a few texts with is generally a bad idea. Fortunately Hinton and Dench proved themselves to be the heartwarming exceptions to the rule, meeting up that Thanksgiving and establishing a heartwarming new holiday tradition.

Hinton and Dench's unexpected friendship has flourished in the years since, with 2021 marking the sixth Thanksgiving they have spent together. However, though the dinner table is no less welcoming than it was before, it has become a little quieter than when they began. Dench's beloved husband Lonnie passed away early last year after the couple contracted COVID-19, making this the second Thanksgiving Hinton and Dench have celebrated without him.

"I get so many people giving condolences, and they're just so genuine and so uplifting," Dench told Arizona's Family (Opens in a new tab)reporter Briana Whitney(Opens in a new tab), describing her internet fame and how social media helped her through her loss.

"If I had never [texted Hinton back], then I would have missed out on a wonderful relationship," said Dench. "I changed my view totally of the younger generation, and now that I reflect back on all these years, I didn't change their life, they changed mine."

  • Nude art is getting censored on social media for a tourism board. So they went to OnlyFans.

Nude art is getting censored on social media for a tourism board. So they went to OnlyFans.

OnlyFans, purveyor of sexually explicit content, has found an unlikely candidate: the Vienna Tourist Board.

    (图1)

Vienna, Austria's capital city, is known amongst other things for a rich history of art(Opens in a new tab), measured by its many museums and infamous artistic revolt(Opens in a new tab). But the tourist board found obstacles in its path to promote the city's art, particularly the works that feature nudity.

Turning to OnlyFans as a solution(Opens in a new tab), Vienna has featured its "18+ content" on the site from artists known for "provocative" portraits, some nude, like Egon Schiele, Richard Gerstl, and Amedeo Modigliani, saying it is providing "these artworks the freedom they deserve".

The campaign repeats the slogan, "Vienna laid bare". Quite literally.

The board released a tongue-in-cheek teaser for their OnlyFans account: "Want to see Venus — and her Mound of Venus?" That's one way to draw people in.

People can subscribe to the account for $3 for 31 days (a discounted rate is now in place). The regular price is $4.99 per month. Subscribers can also obtain a free Vienna City Card or a ticket to one of the city's museums.

In a statement on their website(Opens in a new tab), the board explained the perils of censorship for the promotion of their art, saying that major social media sites have prohibited or curtailed the presence of nude works.

"Vienna and its art institutions are among the casualties of this new wave of prudishness — with nude statues and famous artworks blacklisted under social media guidelines, and repeat offenders even finding their accounts temporarily suspended," the statement reads.

OnlyFans itself nearly stooped to banning sexually explicit content earlier this year, but quickly reversed this decision after widespread protest.

Now, the site is being considered a more open-minded alternative for both people and institutions, like Vienna's Tourist Board. This also raises the question of what is allowed on other platforms like TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram(Opens in a new tab). The policies for censorship and points of regulation aren't exactly consistent when it comes to the most widely-used apps.

SEE ALSO: Posting memes will get you banned from Instagram

According to Instagram's Community Guidelines(Opens in a new tab), "Nudity in photos of paintings(Opens in a new tab) and sculptures is OK", along with photos of "post-mastectomy scarring and women actively breastfeeding." Instagram gave way to photographs of holding breasts after campaigning by Nyome Nicholas-Williams(Opens in a new tab) last year, in order to fight discriminatory censorship practices.

And yet, Instagram has periodically censored art and artists(Opens in a new tab). In 2019, a painting by Peter Paul Rubens, a Flemish artist who created numerous biblical and mythological nudes in the 16th and 17th centuries, was removed off the platform(Opens in a new tab). This year the Leopold Museum(Opens in a new tab), located in Vienna, was stopped from promoting a short video featuring a nude painting by Koloman Mosser(Opens in a new tab). Other instance of artistic censorship are rife: for instance, in 2018, the Natural History Museum's photograph of the Venus of Willendorf figurine was removed by Facebook(Opens in a new tab), who own Instagram. The 30,000-year-old statue was deemed "pornographic".

SEE ALSO: Instagram changes breast holding policy after #IWantToSeeNyome campaign

Over on TikTok, Vienna's Albertina Museum(Opens in a new tab) was banned for its posts of nude artwork(Opens in a new tab) by Nobuyoshi Araki, a Japanese artist.

In other words, history is repeating itself. The artists featured on Vienna Tourist Board's OnlyFans account were subjected to censorship centuries ago(Opens in a new tab). And they're still facing it today.

"...it hardly comes as any surprise to learn that some of their artworks fell foul of the censors over 100 years ago. And the battle against censorship still rages on: with the rise of social media, bans like these are back in headlines once again," the Vienna Tourist Board write on their website.

With OnlyFans, Vienna's many museums have fostered a channel of communication and promotion, fighting seemingly arbitrary censorship in other spaces of the internet. Their "NSFW" content belongs in an unrestricted home.

    7 NSFW alternatives to OnlyFans

UPDATE: Aug. 25, 2021, 9:06 a.m. EDT On August 25, OnlyFans said they're suspending their plan to ban explicit content(Opens in a new tab). It's unclear when or if said ban will go into place, but these alternatives are available regardless.

    (图1)

OnlyFans will ban sexually explicit content as of October 1, leaving many sex workers scrambling to find new homes for their content — and leaving patrons to find new ways to support them.

The platform's decision is just the latest in how the tech industry ostracizes sex workers. Despite its popularity, OnlyFans struggled to find investors and kneeled to banks and payout providers(Opens in a new tab) who balked at explicit content. The company is currently trying to raise more money.

OnlyFans hasn't been totally clear about what it constitutes as sexually explicit content. It confirmed to Mashable that creators will be able to post nude photos and videos that fit within its policy, but the related rules don't exist yet.

Thankfully, there are alternatives where adult creators can host their content with fewer restrictions and fans can enjoy it.

    1. FanCentro(Opens in a new tab)

FanCentro is similar to OnlyFans in that fans can buy a subscription to their favorite creators, but you can also buy clips a la carte as well. The site takes a 20 percent cut(Opens in a new tab) of subscriptions; for reference, OnlyFans also takes a 20 percent cut(Opens in a new tab).

In a blog post after OnlyFans' announcement, FanCentro stated that users can migrate their content from OF to FC(Opens in a new tab). FanCentro also offers Centro University(Opens in a new tab), dedicated to teaching creators how to create and maintain an online fanbase.

    2. ManyVids(Opens in a new tab)

ManyVids calls itself a "one-stop shop"(Opens in a new tab) for content. It has individual videos, bespoke videos for fans, subscription options, camming, physical store items (like apparel), texting/chatting options, phone numbers to call content creators, tip options, and contests.

Depending on the type of content, ManyVids takes 20 to 40 percent(Opens in a new tab) of sales. According to users on Twitter, ManyVids doesn't have a scheduling function(Opens in a new tab) at the time of publication.

    3. Mygirlfund(Opens in a new tab)

Mygirlfund is a one-on-one chat service. Creators can also offer other content if they wish, like custom videos and photos. Creators receive 1 credit for every message they reply to ($1.80 according to CamGirlWiki(Opens in a new tab)), but their FAQ(Opens in a new tab) states that if creators decide to "take it to the next level," they set their own rates.

    4. AVN Stars(Opens in a new tab)

AVN Stars claims it's a social media site "by and for the industry." Users can make money through a subscription model, but can also sell videos, messaging services, and receive tips from fans.

AVN Stars takes 20 percent of a creator's sales.

    5. Justforfans(Opens in a new tab)

Justforfans touts itself as the "ultimate" adult blogging platform and marketplace; they operate under a subscription model(Opens in a new tab). Shortly after OnlyFans' announcement, Justforfans released a statement(Opens in a new tab) saying its staff is completely comprised of sex workers and people who've long been in the porn industry — and that explicit content is never going away.

According to users on Twitter, Justforfans takes a 30 percent cut(Opens in a new tab).

    6. Ismygirl(Opens in a new tab)

Ismygirl offers subscriptions(Opens in a new tab), a la carte and custom videos and messages, and live content. Patrons can tip their creators, too. Ismygirl takes 20 percent of revenue.

    7. Loyalfans(Opens in a new tab)

Loyalfans is — what else? — a subscription-based site for adult creators that takes 20 percent of gross sales. In a statement after OnlyFans' announcement(Opens in a new tab), Loyalfans said it allows all forms of creative, consensual expression.

SEE ALSO: The best alternatives to Pornhub and Xvideos

OnlyFans may have been the best-known site for independent adult creators, but there's a plethora of others to choose from; they'll undoubtedly be more, too. It's unknown whether the pressure from financial institutions that OnlyFans faced will spread to these other sites, but for now, explicit content is safe elsewhere.

  • Google will automatically delete visits to abortion clinics from your location history

Google will automatically delete visits to abortion clinics from your location history

With the downfall of Roe v. Wade last month, tech companies are left to pick up the pieces on suddenly shaky legal terrain.

    (图1)

One such company is Google(Opens in a new tab), which announced in a blog post on Friday that an update is coming to the location history feature associated with Google accounts in the next few weeks. The update will automatically flag and delete any visits to abortion clinics (as well as other facilities like domestic violence shelters and addiction treatment centers) from a user’s location history.

This important because, in a post-Roe world, legal abortion access changes across state lines. U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland has stated in no uncertain terms(Opens in a new tab) that the Department of Justice will protect the right to seek an abortion out-of-state, but there’s already legislation being drafted(Opens in a new tab) in red states that would punish people who travel for abortions if enshrined into law.

If law enforcement has the authority to punish those who get abortions across state lines, a digital diary of every place a person has visited would naturally be desirable as evidence, hence Google auto-deleting visits to abortion clinics from its logs. There will also be an update to Fitbit to allow users to delete multiple menstrual cycle logs at once, amid fears that data collected by period tracking apps could also be used against people who need abortions.

For what it’s worth, Google said it would “oppose demands that are overly broad or otherwise legally objectionable” when it comes to using data as evidence, but that statement leaves plenty of wiggle room. As always, the best way to avoid having evidence used against you is to eliminate the evidence outright.

Twitter users get creative with emoji thanks to the If I text you meme

Wonder why your timeline is flooded with random emoji? We've got you covered.

    (图1)

The latest Twitter meme combines two of my favorite things: emoji and wordplay. Users are tweeting "when I text you [insert emoji] know it means..." followed by a clever or outlandish meaning for that emoji.

The trend treats emoji as a jumping off point to make a joke, and some of the most popular examples reference the internet's best inside jokes. It also spotlights many underutilized emoji, and we all know the weirder the emoji, the better.

According to Twitter, the phrase "when I text you" has been tweeted over 200,000 times in the past week. This isn't the first time emoji have been reclaimed for something other than their intended use. Emoji have become their own language with each generation and various social circles assigning emoji different meanings. Gen Z famously uses 😭 and 💀 for laughing rather than the more Millennial 😂. Not to mention, all the emoji that have become synonymous with thirst and horniness.

This meme allows chronically online wordsmiths to show off their creativity and will hopefully spark a renaissance in bizarre emoji use. Here are some of my favorite examples of the meme.
